Crazy Colours

Crazy Colours. A spectacular effect with the minimum or resources and effort! Children love this experiment but do get them to ‘predict’ what they think will happen before adding the soap. Then at the end ask them to think ‘why’ it happened. There is a video giving a simple explanation for them to watch on my channel. It’s called ‘Crazy Colours’ and it is in the FUN SCIENCE playlist. I used UHT semi-skimmed milk. A further experiment could be to see if anything different happens when you use full fat or skimmed milk. For a rainbow effect use red, blue and yellow. The soap can be applied by a brush as shown in the video or by finger or cotton wool bud.

Why does it happen?

Although milk is mainly water it does contain lots of other things like vitamins and protein and fat.

Fats and protein are very sensitive to changes in the milk. When soap is added it sends the fat molecules crazy and they all start to twist and turn. During these acrobatics the colour molecules get pushed around so creating the crazy patterns.

Rainbow Coloured Flowers

Georgie had a surprise at Rome airport yesterday when she came face to face with a Christmas Tree multicoloured just like her! Here she is with Paolo and Ruben from UNICEF.

Then we saw this cake in patisserie Glacé in the Marina Bay Link Mall, Singapore so now you know where the JUMBLES are visiting. Yes, it’s Singapore!

So it was RAINBOWS everywhere!

Fast, simple and fun investigation to do at home. All you need is a plate, milk, liquid soap and food colouring.

Be warned that food colouring stains everything including fingers. In the video I use my finger to apply the soap because it’s easier to film.  You may want to use a cotton wool bud instead!

Because young children are naturally curious and science investigations stimulate this natural curiosity.

Because science answers all those tricky questions about the world around them.

Because it encourages children to problem solve. To be creative thinkers. To develop a love of learning.

Because it motivates children to be active not passive.

Because by engaging in science investigations children learn to challenge what they see and hear rather just accepting.

Because they learn that making mistakes is the way to learn.

Because children learn best through doing. Through play.

Because it’s FUN!

You don’t need to be a teacher or have a science degree to engage in science investigations. ‘ Jumble Fun’ has made Science easy and fun.

Resources have been kept to a minimum and can usually be found in your kitchen or bathroom. We suggest watching a programme yourself prior to viewing with your child then you can easily gather the resources together in a bag

Floating Egg Experiment

Why don’t they do this kind of thing at school? By that I mean in  first or primary school.  

If you catch them young so many more children would be interested  in Science!

Make a cloud in a jar

Colour volcanoes. Fun Science Experiment for Home and School.

A fun and easy investigation for children from 4 years upwards. 

At Jumble Fun we don’t spoon feed !  We want youngsters to ask questions, to think creatively, to try out their own experiments and not just copy ours! 

Children need to be encouraged to predict the possible results before watching or doing an investigation and to draw conclusions from the results. 

This experiment is a fun way colour mixing as well introducing acid reactions.
